Equalization Promises Not Kept
From August 31, 2008
When the government promised an improved equalization formula, the provinces of Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador expected more than the status quo. But that is what they received.
The government's 2007 Budget offered the provinces the option of moving to an enriched equalization formula, but Nova Scotia and Newfoundland/Labrador would only get it if they gave up their clawback protection under the Atlantic accords.
Saskatchewan, meanwhile, had been promised that resource revenues would be fully removed from the equalization formula, but they were not.
On intergovernmental and provincial matters Canadians need to understand that Stephen Harper simply does not keep his promises.
